Farming for Food

2008

The Marquee

The displays and demonstrations in the Farming for Food marquee will show in a fun way how what  the farmer grows becomes food in our shops.  Several of the stalls will have interactive elements.  For instance, children can bake their own loaf of bread and take it home for free!  There are quizzes, a demonstration of sausage, cheese and butter making, cereals & milling, brewing, guidance on running a smallholding and more.  Bees produce honey but are also very important in agriculture as pollinators.  An observation hive with live bees will show how a hive works and experienced beekeepers will be on hand to explain the extraordinary social organisation of a colony.

On the stage at intervals throughout the three days will be cheese making demonstrations, soup making, a talk on dry stone walling (complementing the outside demonstration), eco friendly food production and a humorous talk on traditional Yorkshire Cooking-"Not just Yorkshire Pudding"

OUTSIDE

Many of you will have seen the BBC2 series "Grow Your Own Veg" presented by Carol Klein.  Each week, the series featured a 3m square vegetable garden at the Royal Horticultural Society's Harlow Carr Gardens.  The Garden will be at the Festival.  Alison Mundie & Amy lax, who appeared throughout the series, will be on hand to explain how you can have veg all year round from a small plot and young people will be able to plant a vegetable seed in a pot and take it home.

Farm Animals

Livestock Farming is very Important to the Dales and makes a valuable contribution to the nation's food supply. We will be displaying a typical dairy cow and a beef animal throughout the weekend.  The sheep of the local area will be displayed, with talks on their uniqueness.  Sheep shearing will also be demonstrated throughout.  Finally for the children and, of course, any goat lovers we will display a nanny goat with two kids.
